Unit 5 Concept Questions
Unit 5: Factoring (chapter 8 in textbook)
0. Write a paragraph describing in your own words what this unit was about and what you learned.
1. What is a monomial? A binomial ? a trinomial? a polynomial? Define and give an example of each.
2. How do you find the degree of polynomial? How can you name a polynomial using its degrees? Give three examples and explain why you named each one the way you did.
3. How do you multiply 2 polynomials using the distributive property? Give an example
4. How do you multiply 2 binomials? What is FOIL? How do you multiply a binomial using the “box method” (see #65 page 399 for example of box method) ? Show the same problem both ways and show that you get the same answer using either method.
5. What does it mean to factor? How can you factor a number? factor a monomial? How do you find the greatest common factor between 2 terms? Give examples for each idea and explain how to do it.
6. How do you factor a trinomial when a=1? How do you factor a trinomial when a does not = 1?
Explain in words and give an example?
7. What is a difference of squares? Give some examples and explain how you know you have a difference of squares. How do you factor a difference of squares? Give an example.
8. What is the relationship between multiplying and factoring? Give an example of a trinomial, factor it first, then multiply the factors and explain what you end up with.
9. Find a video that discusses a topic from this unit, embed it into your webpage and write a paragraph explaining what it is about.
